1 sec track CD

obscurica vynil cover

I guess many of you already Know it: Obscurica ( from http://www.obscurica.com/sloppy_seconds.html ) is doing a cd with only 1-minute-long track .. that means 80 jigsaw track of 1 minutes = 60*80 = 4800 artists on ONE compilation ! that is nice. world record! i added an ambient sample as “manuel sanada”.

My idea is to gather 60 pieces by YOU, *core people, and reserve track position 66 ( to stay in line with those “skull and blood” stereotype :-)

I will mass mail you all for this. i think it would be nice. …in case you are lazy here it s the full description am accepting submissions for a comp entitled “Sloppy Seconds”.
Submissions must be exactly one second in length. They may be found sound, original compositions, previously released or unreleased.. anything. They are all being strung together into a massive, A.D.D. inducing, pummeling, roller coaster ride of an audio experience.

What’s in a second? A second is a long time. You can get 4 or 5 recognizable ideas across in a second. An average pop song only has 3 or 4 distinct components, at most, so you could easily reduce an entire pop song into a second. The universe was created in less than a second. So what’s your excuse?

Ideally, my goal would be to fill an 80 minute CD in this way. At 60 artists a minute, that would be 4800 separate submissions, with a track marker every minute. I know, I’m aiming for the sky, and it’s probably a totally unrealistic goal. You can help by passing the website around to anyone you think might be interested. Any style of music will be accepted. When I deem it’s “done”, submissions will no longer be accepted and it’ll be released in whatever form it takes. There is no timeline for this process, but I suspect it will take awhile.
1. Email a wav file of exactly one second in length to obscurica@gmail.com.
2. Include your artist name and the name of your track.
3. One track per artist, please. (Side projects are OK and encouraged, if you want to send more than one track… make up a new artist name :)
4. No artist copies will be distributed. I’m sure you understand why, just too many of them.

Update #1: I’m also accepting graphic files, small ones, to be used in the cover art. Send a small jpg along with your track if you wish.
Update #2: LESS DRONE PLEASE! I’m getting some really good submissions, and I have to say, the ones I feel are most successful are the ones that convey more than one idea per track. Don’t limit yourself to a single sound for this comp… see how much you can cram into a single second! You might be surprised.. thanks and keep up the good work.
Update #3: I’m finding that fewer than half the tracks are actually a second in length. The reason they are all to be exactly a second in length is so that individual tracks can be found by timing. If they are not exactly a second in length, I will apply one or more of the following processes to make them fit: time expand, time condense, edit, crop, truncate, fold, spindle and mutilate. This may change the sound or nature of your finished track, so you’ve been warned.
Update #4: Possibly the best track so far, and probably the funniest. In one second, this artist tells a story. I present to you, as a sterling example of what’s capable to express in one second, 154 BPM Speed 01 - 16 bit shit.
Update #5: It’s far from finished, but it’s already received a review!!! The UK web-rag CD Times had this to say about the project, and the sample: http://cdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=2980. THANK YOU, CD TIMES!!!
Update #6: Still more press! Check out this blog: http://startlingmoniker.wordpress.com/2006/12/12/seconds-anyone/
Update #7: Some wackadoodle named Vargind is dutifully entering this thing into Discogs as updates are made here. Thank you, Vargind! http://www.discogs.com/release/666475
